I read Coates' "Between the World and Me" and I have enjoyed his book. This piece of writing is a prime example to show how selective people are to acknowledging reality and history. I have gone to the Holocaust museum and in DC for a school trip and saw things in a different light. So why aren't there school trips to see plantations? I find it interesting to see how Coates says that all forms of abuse come to mind someone thinks of the word 'slavery' instead of seeing that there were actual people living and working there. When we learn about slavery, we do not think of the personal relationships that were destroyed but of the physical hardships slaves have endured. He has very good writing pieces and I might just have to get his new book.
